What is a good mileage for a used car?
It can be tough to gauge what mileage is good for a used car. Usually, drivers put an average of 12,000 miles per year. If a car is 5 years old, look for a mileage of around 60,000 miles. If a car is 10 years old, look for a mileage of around 120,000.
However, mileage on a car doesn't really tell the whole story. Make sure you check the vehicle history report for any accidents, visually inspect the interior and exterior, and test drive the used vehicle.
What to look for when buying a used car?
There are a few things to look for when buying a used car.
- Know how much you can afford along with all the other expenses you have such as for your home, food, etc.
- Decide on what type of vehicle you need. Do you need a sedan, coupe, SUV, truck, van, etc.
- Browse through used vehicles that fit your budget and vehicle type.
- Check the vehicle history report. We provide a detailed vehicle history report with all of our used cars.
- Inspect and test drive the vehicle. For the exterior, check the body condition, glass, suspension, lights and tires at the minimum. For the interior, check the seats, pedals, instruments and gauge clusters, sound system, roof, trunk at the minimum. Make sure you check the fluids, leaks and other mechanical components that are vital to the vehicle. When taking it out for a test drive, check the brakes, steering, gear shifts, and any other component that's vital for a safe and smooth drive.
- If you would like to purchase the vehicle, check the paperwork, sign it and register the vehicle.
Is it better to buy a new or used car?
That really depends on what you need. If you need the latest technology and safety features, buying a new car will most likely have them. New cars will likely need less maintenance at the beginning of the ownership. If you're looking to save more money upfront and through depreciation, buying a used car is a great choice. However, depending on the age and mileage on the used car, it may require more maintenance.
How long can I finance a used car?
Usually, used car financing terms can vary between 24 months to 84 months. The shorter the finance term, the higher the monthly payment, but lower the total interest paid through the loan term.
